OMLB
“Our Merry Little Band” of Module Builders
DDT is pleased to be the home base for a small group of module builders that work
together to produce “publishable quality” Bible study modules that are conservative
and evangelical. Originally, we were quite unorganized; but due to a providential
set of circumstances, we came together to produce our work. To put it succinctly:
we were looking for mutual support at the same time another eSword site began to
disintegrate. The result was we banded together for support, encouragement and fellowship.
I had access to a church internet site that I could use to put some modules on; and
voila! OMLB was born.
As I began making reference to this group of module builders, I simply referred to
us as “Our Merry Little Band.” At the time, I didn’t intend for it to become a name.
You see, we weren’t organized enough to have one!
From the Fall of 2009 through the Fall of 2011, though, we’ve developed a de facto
system of operation that actually works quite smoothly. There is no president, nor
any officers. We have all volunteered to work together. There are no assignments,
nor expectations. There really is only one mutual understanding that we have: it
is our intention to construct “publishable quality” modules that promote the gospel
of Jesus Christ.
It often appears that I am the spokesman for this group. I am not. It just appears
so because I’m the one with the website. Let me assure you that I do not speak for
the entire group. And let me tell you this - they are a great group of Christian
brothers and sisters to work with.
Over time we have developed a method for building & distributing our modules. Here
is how OMLB functions:
- Each of us selects our own modules to build. Assignments are not given. Occasionally
some may ask for suggestions, or even offer them. But our module creation work is
independent. We occasionally band together in a spirit of team work (example: all
four charter members have built modules in the “Expositor’s Bible” series). But even
in these areas of cooperation, we are Independent Contractors choosing to work together.
- After we independently build a module, we proofread our own module. (None of us wants
to submit “subpar” formatting!) Then we share the module with each other. This is
the “Proof Queue Module.” The hope and expectation is that someone else from the
group will voluntarily “proofscan” the module, too. (“Proofscanning” is less rigorous
than proofreading.) That person will either make a list of suggested edits, or (with
permission from the original builder) simply make the edits themselves.
- Once the module has been proofscanned, corrections are made. The module is then shared
a second time with the group. We call this the “Final Module.” It is at this point
that “the circle is closed” for OMLB module building. The module has been proofed,
edited, proofed again, edited again, and distributed as a final module. It then is
the job of the original builder to post his/her module for public distribution. And
that’s where I come in!
- All of OMLB have consented to let me post their modules at my website. Please understand:
that is not a requirement to be in OMLB. It is simply an easy avenue for modules
to be posted. I convert each eSword module to be used with “The Word” Bible software,
and I then post both. (If any of our builders originally built modules for The Word,
we would then convert them to be used with eSword.)
- I only post modules at DDT.com that broadly reflect the doctrinal statement of the
website. Of course, not every module will agree with every fine point of doctrine;
but as a whole, I only post conservative Bible study modules.
- OMLB broadly understands what I will and will not post. I’ve only rejected two modules
during our tenure together (and one of them I may publish anyway!). If they desire
to work on a module that is outside of my parameters, they may still do so (after
all, we’re all Independent Contractors). But when it comes time for posting, it will
be the individual builder’s job to find another outlet.
So, that’s how we work. OMLB has built 200+ modules during our 24 months of working
together. Wow! Over 200 “publishable quality” modules! When I think about that, I
stand amazed at what the Lord is allowing us to do.
Now - how about you? Would you like to help spread the gospel of Jesus Christ? Could
the Lord use you by joining OMLB? Our work is not technical; it simply requires 1)
minimal computer skills that can be learned in a couple of hours; and 2) the heart
to be involved in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you can use eSword, send
email, surf the internet, and type a letter in a word processor, you can build eSword
modules. No, I’m not kidding, nor am I exaggerating.
As long as you desire to build modules that promote the gospel of Jesus Christ, we
are interested in including you into our group. We teach! We encourage! We provide
assistance! We fellowship! If you’re interested in this kind of work - we have a
place for you.
If you have questions, would like to know more, or are just ready to get started
building modules (!), drop me an enote and we’ll get started.
